A TRIBUTE TO
CHARLES MANICOLO
1941 - 2003

Charles Manicolo was much beloved by all who came in contact with him. His many qualities, interests and character suggest that there will always be only one Charles "Mannix" Manicolo.

Charles Ignatius Manicolo was born in the suburb of St Julian’s, Malta, on 30th November 1941. His mother’s name was Josephine, nee Bonnici, and father Julian. Charles was the eldest of four sons, Philip, Joe and Victor. He was born into a time when Malta was heavily involved in the Second World War.

Following his school years where he was also involved in Catholic Action, Charles in 1955 felt a call to do some studies at the Diocesan Seminary with the priesthood in mind. This happy time as Charles described it was interrupted by his migration to Australia with his family on 7th July 1956, arriving at Fremantle on 29th July 1956.

In Australia Charles started work as a Cobbler, helping to support his family which at the time extended to his grandmother. After a brief period, he joined Australia Post where he spent the remainder of his working career.

Charles was introduced into the Society of Christian Doctrine by another SDC Member and started attending the meetings regularly in West Melbourne. He knew that through his Baptism, he was called to share the good news of Christ with those to whom he was mostly in contact.

Charles was incorporated as a Member of the SDC in Sydney on 29th December 1959. Charles was always a very appreciative person and showed this by his loyalty and generosity to the Society. For many years he provided transport for young people to our centres at considerable personal expense. He carried out what was asked of him with great enthusiasm and joy.

Charles attended SDC activities at West Melbourne, North Sunshine, Glenroy and West Sunshine. His spirituality was drawn from his extensive knowledge of the writings of our Founder, Blessed George Preca and his sincere devotion to the Catholic way of life. Charles was very determined in carrying out his religious duties and it was his daily practice for many years to attend daily Mass during the lunchtimes of his working life.

A tribute to Charles would not be complete without mention of his vast interests and appreciation of culture.

First and foremost was his zest for learning and study. He acquired remarkable background knowledge of the Scriptures and in particular the Old Testament and in his later years undertook studies at the Catholic Theological College in Melbourne. His nickname among his fellow Members was "Mannix" coined after Archbishop Daniel Mannix, whom Charles had a great respect for.

Then there was his sensitivity to issues of social justice. This lead to Charles being an active member of Amnesty International. Such convictions were validated by his love of travel. This led him to Europe, South America, Sudan, and Kenya; absorbing many cultural experiences which he subsequently shared very joyfully with us. His trademark was a camera in hand.

His resourcefulness led to many interesting presentations on issues relating to the faith.

And then we come to Charles’ passion for theatre. This passion led to very memorable performances in regional SDC productions. One will not forget his emphatic performances as Blessed George Preca in "George Preca, One Man’s Dream Becomes a Reality", and the Proclaimer of John the Baptist in the presentation of the "Jubilee". And smiles and laughter are still the order when one recalls his impersonation as the Major General from the musical Pirates of Penzance and the King himself, Elvis Presley.

Charles entered eternal life on 21st January 2003. He will be remembered for many things and will always remain dear to us. He was a good and faithful servant to the end, and we give thanks to God for the many qualities Charles shared with us. We pray that Charles will be received into the heavenly kingdom, in the company of Blessed George Preca, for the great work he has done as a SDC Brother.

The funeral services held for our Confrere, Charles were befitting for the occasion. We acknowledge Father Charles Gauci who officiated and the Concelebrants, Father Karmel Borg, Deer Park, Father Victor Farrugia, Father Bill Jordan, Parish Priest of Charles’ parish, St Brendans, Flemington and Father Bernard Mc Fayden sm, Sunshine West. And to the Members who travelled interstate to attend. And to all Charles’ family here and overseas.

A Family Mass as an opportunity for those who were taught by Charles to remember and pray was celebrated at the Ardeer centre on 27 February. A Celebration of the Life of Charles was held at the SDC centre he attended, Ardeer, on 1 March. Present were Members and friends of Charles.

May he rest in peace.
