God always makes use of people who have an open heart and a disposition of faith. The first Superior General Eugenio Borg possessed these characteristics to a marked degree. It was Fr Preca who kindled the flame of faith in his very first meeting with him, when he spoke to him about the Passion of Jesus Christ, and who continued to set his heart on fire for God with his own life and example.

Those people who had the opportunity to live with Eugenio Borg confirm that his faith was evident in the way he prayed, in his intense devotion to the Eucharist, in the persuasive way he spoke about it, and in his way of life, characterized by poverty, purity and a holy zeal for the preaching of the Gospel.

Eugenio Borg achieved a remarkable union with God through his prayers and meditations. He was absolutely confident that God heard and answered to the prayers of his faithful servants. He prayed incessantly, even when travelling and he also made sure to find ample time to meditate on Jesus Christ's passion and on God's attributes. His meditations usually took place in front of the tabernacle. In such moments his face became radiant with joy so that people who happened to be present couldn't help being impressed. One person admits: "The faith of Eugenio Borg in the Eucharist was truly amazing - the way he knelt, the way he conversed with the Eucharist, the flash in his eyes - all these were clear proofs not only of Christ's real presence but also of the devotion of Eugenio Borg to Jesus Christ, the lover of his soul.

His faith was so great that sometimes he experienced the incredible joy only Jesus Christ can give. This faith made him cry with joy, and this joy sometimes hindered him from sleeping at night. In fact he really believed that those who were filled with faith and who led a pure life experienced Heaven here on earth. And he was certainly speaking from his own experience.

He also sought to transmit his faith to his fellow people through his way of life and also through his sermons or speeches. He was often asked to speak to the people about this subject. In such sermons he based his thoughts on the Bible, the Holy Fathers of the Church and also on real life experiences. He showed that real faith should lead to repentance and to a real commitment to God. He was very convincing in his speeches since there was absolutely no divergence between what he preached and the way he lived.

The first Superior General did not perform any miraculous or awesome deed but he lived an intense life of faith. This, in turn, led to many conversions and it also sets an example to all of us who wish to follow in the footsteps of our Founder and of Eugenio Borg.
