During the summer months
that are between July and September the Society organized three missionary
groups that involved a total number of 14 sdc Members together with three
GEC Superiors.
The first group to leave was that which headed to Albania.
Presently the Society has embarked on a building project that is meant to
provide new labs, library and gymnasium to our College at Korçë. Our
visit therefore was intended to help our Members there with jobs related
mainly to electrical installation, trunking and plumbing. With the help of
many benefactors, much of the hardware needed was bought in Malta and
transported to Albania overland. In fact three Members were responsible to
drive up to our place in Korce and back using one of our Member’s van.
The duration of this visit was five weeks.
Superior Emmanuel Catania was
responsible for the group. Similar visits are
expected to take place early
in the year 2002. The members who formed part of this group were: Joe Borg
of B’Kara II, Sandro Vella of Gharghur, Mario Borg of St. Paul’s Bay,
Gwido Vassallo of Marsa; Christopher Cuschieri of Vittoriosa; Ivan Cutajar
of Zebbug; Francis Cortis of Zebbug; John Tonna of Mqabba and Joseph
Zammit of Siggiewi.
Another group, this time for the Sudan left Malta
on Wednesday 25th July via Cairo. Accompanying this group was Superior
Carmel Callus who after serving 7 years as House Superior at B’Kara II
is now appointed Superior of our Centre in El Obeid. The group obviously
visited both Centres, that of Khartoum and the one in El Obeid. In
Khartoum, the group had the opportunity to see the Society’s work and
activities both at Mayo and Sebil Centre. In Mayo, our Members help also
in two out-stations and the group paid visits to both of them. Every visit
was a unique experience with the members of that community welcoming us in
that typical African warm heartedness.
After ten days in Khartoum, the group then
travelled to El Obeid. On arriving there, we had the opportunity to meet
His Grace Bishop Antonio Menegazzo who was about to leave the country to
participate in an East African Bishops’ meeting, which was to be held in
Nairobi, Kenya.
In El Obeid, the visiting Members were able to
participate in all the Society’s activities and also tour our School and
meet the teaching staff. At this Centre, apart from the activities held in
our residence, our Members offer their services also in one of the parish
out-stations, that of Rokab. Our experience at Rokab is a lasting
experience! The children at this Centre may be the poorest in and around
the Town, yet their energy, joviality and friendship supplant their
material poverty. We were so welcomed that the Members wanted to celebrate
Sunday Liturgy and Eucharist in this destitute yet vibrant out-station. In
El Obeid, the group found time also to give a helping hand in printing two
textbooks, which are to be used by our students at our school and even
repair some of the household appliances that needed some repairs or
service.
The Members accompanying Superior Tonio Caruana,
apart from Carmel Callus, were Samuel Farrugia of Balzan, Hubert Balzan of
Siggiewi, Mario Bezzina of Zurrieq and Owen Baldacchino of Qormi II.
The third group was earmarked to visit our
Centres in Kenya. This group also consisted of four Members and they
accompanied Superior Tonio and Superior Natalino Camilleri. On arrival at
Nairobi airport, the group headed to Ruiru, a town some 24 km away from
the Capital.
During our visit, we were very fortunate to have
the opportunity of meeting both His Excellency Maurice Cardinal Otunga and
His Grace Archbishop Indingi. Both prelates found time not only to greet
us but also to give us a word of encouragement and a special message and
blessing.
During our stay in Ruiru, we saw the good work
our Members are doing at the Vocational Training School and obviously we
participated both in our daily assignment and the catechetical groups
especially those held on Sunday during the Sunday school. One of our
particular mornings was dedicated to pay a visit to Murera, a branch of
Ruiru where a kindergarten school has been started on an experimental
basis and during a Saturday we held a retreat.
After spending our first week in Ruiru, the group
than travelled to Mpeketoni, an 800 km journey by bus that took us some 14
hours. At Mpeketoni our Members had the opportunity of meeting and getting
to know all the local Members especially Simon Wekesa who was in Malta for
the Beatification of our Founder together with Evan Ngugi from Ruiru. As
part of our activities in Mpeketoni, apart from our daily sdc programme,
we also organized a seminar, which was both beneficial and inspiring for
the whole group. It was also in Mpeketoni where we had the opportunity to
have a dip in the Indian Ocean. The Members that formed part of this group
were, Superiors Paul Deguara of St Paul’s Bay, George Agius of
Vittoriosa, John Micallef of Marsascala and sdc Member Duncan Gatt of
Naxxar.
