Our
vision is that the criminal justice acknowledged and respects
victims’ rights
Criminal justice
in Malta is administered in such a way that victims
are left out of the system. In
recent years, legislators have grappled with the fast
rising levels of criminality in a haphazard manner.
In the process
of securing better laws, and a better administrative
procedure of justice, the rights of the accused were
safeguarded. But
victims did not receive the same attention.
Legislators and criminal justice practitioners
must recognise that the victim is a key player in the system.
Leaving the victim at the side, or ignoring the victim
completely, only means that the system has forgot its starting
point. Victim Support Malta’s vision is to restore victims’ rights
to their equitable state.
Ultimately, Victim Support Malta would like
to see all victims of crime protected against multiple,
and secondary, victimisation. It would like to see all
potential victims conscious of their rights and duties;
and the system fully conscious of its obligations towards
all victims of crime. Victims must not be left out of anyone’s
consideration any more.
In such manner, Victim Support Malta endeavours
to make the system more efficient and less oblivious of
victims.
