The volunteers of Mid-Dlam ghad-Dawl meet the
prisoners every week. Infallibly, constantly and regularly, we
have been doing this since December 1995. In fact, we consider
it extremely important that our meetings with prisoners be kept
on a strictly regular basis, never failing to keep our appointment
with scrupuleous constancy.
Our visits within the prison complex are held
in this way:
- On Tuesdays, from 4.30 pm till 7.00 pm, we visit most of the
male sections: Divisions I, II, III, IV, V, Ex-Female, and Old
Infirmery. At present we have no permission to visit Division
VI and XI.
- On Thursdays, from 9.30 am till 11.30 am, we visit the Female
Section.
- Our visits to the Juvenile Section are on an individual level,
and these are almost daily.
- Other individual visits are held during the week to both male
and female prisoners.
On Tuesday evenings and Thursday mornings our
visits to prisoners are held within the divisions themselves where
the prisoners have their cells and spend most of the day. The individual
visits are held according to the same regime followed in normal
cases for all visits to inmates.
For the visits within the divisions it is the
prison practice to have not more than four volunteers visiting
together at one given time. Though as an organisation we do have
a handsome list of volunteers who may take part in the visits on
a regular basis, we cannot exceed the four-a-time limit.
During our visits within the divisions we usually
go around the large divisions and talk to this and that prisoner.
No agenda exists. We simple talk about what anyone would like to
bring up. Most of the time, since we usually are always very much
expected by the prisoners, they themselves come up to us and begin
the discussion.
Apart from general talk, we also deal with personal
problems. During our visits, in fact, prisoners take the opportunity
to ask for help. These demands are usually related to family,
court or prison matters. We always follow each demand very diligently
with the competent authorities, and up until the end.
During our visits we regulate ourselves according
to our philosophy.
